Eclipse Ride 2024

Event date:
Mon, 04/08/2024 - 8:30am

Time: 8:30am - 6:00pm

Ride Description:

Are you ready to get Mooned, of course you are, come join the Eclipse Ride April 8, 24. The next full Eclipse will not occur in Ohio for decades.

Meet at QCHD 8:30am riders meeting 8:45, KSU at 9:00 am. We’re taking back roads to and from Minster, OH, (approximately 190 miles round trip). I will be stopping in Greenville, OH for a break on our way there, which can be used for gas, food etc. at EB Truck stop which includes the Long-Haul Sub Shop.

NOTE: Restaurant in Minster (Wooden Shoe) which I had planned to use required $100 deposit and guaranteed $500 in meals to reserve their dining room. Due to their demand, I’m suggesting each bring a brown bag lunch and drinks or purchase sub sandwiches at the truck stop (30+ miles to Minster) by the way it’s exceptionally clean.

Alternate restaurant choices in Minster include McDonalds, Subway and Marco’s Pizza, Bud’s Pizza all of which are short distances away. City officials are warning residents of heavy traffic, lines will be long for most local services.

My original ride posting 1/5/24 mentioned we would use Paris St Park; I’ve been informed that park will be closed for construction. We will now use Four Seasons Park off 7th St. ½ mile away. This park is very large with 300 parking spaces, 8 baseball diamonds, pickle ball courts, basketball courts, walking paths around a small lake, shelters, restrooms. City officials will not reserve shelters. If you care to bring chairs or something to throw on the ground to sit or lay on that’s entirely up to you. Rather than dealing with chairs etc., bleachers (there’s numerous) around baseball diamonds will be available. Shelters with picnic tables are available, its unknown how many will be taken when we arrive, I will try my best to reserve some.

Baseball concession stands will not be open for food service; all restrooms will be open.

If anyone cares to bring games, while we are waiting for the Moon to do its job, bring them along.

Minster, OH was chosen because it’s close proximity to the center of this total Eclipse. Its total width path equals approximately 115 miles wide viewing, total Eclipse viewing (where we will be) begins a few minutes after 3pm, it last slightly over 3 minutes, Eclipse total last 3 hours, total time Moon will be between Sun and Earth.

ISO glasses are required during times of partial eclipse until full Eclipse. Glasses can be taken off for the brief 3 minutes period. Caution do not try looking directly at the sun without eye protection. Here’s a tip if you care to try it, if you want pictures other than full Eclipse, take your ISO glasses hold them over the camera Lense. Special glasses are required, I have purchased 20 pair that have ISO 12312-2:2015 standards $1.00 each.

For the ride home, I’ve made arrangements to stop in W. Alexandria for dinner at Buckeye Jakes which is about half way home.

Last but not least, if it’s overcast cloudy or raining, there’s no sense in going, the ride will be cancelled. Cancellation decision will be made the morning of the ride check the web site.

Thanks for your interest in joining us for this rare solar event.
